Work begins on creation of new supermarket in York


Retailer Lidl confirmed construction is underway at its store at Monks Cross, in Huntington.

A Lidl spokesperson said the new store will feature a 1,516sq.m of sales area, a bakery, baby-changing facilities and middle aisle.

As reported in The Press, plans to demolish the site of a former TK Maxx store went before councillors in September 2024 for a decision on the application.

The Lidl spokesperson said: “Outside, there will be ample parking, including seven electric vehicle charging points, while solar panels will help power the store.

“The site will also benefit from tree planting and soft landscaping to enhance the surrounding environment.”

Liam Schofield, regional head of property at Lidl GB, said: “It’s fantastic to see construction underway at our newest York store.

“Our dedicated teams have worked incredibly hard over the past few years to reach this milestone, and we’re pleased to confirm we’re on track to welcome customers before the end of 2025.”

A drive-thru is set to be built at the north west of the planned site.
