Plans unveiled for new city centre cycling route as public asked to give feedback

Glasgow City Council are proposing the new route on West Nile Street which will run parallel to Buchanan Street, creating a north-south connection between Cowcaddens Road and Argyle Street.

It would also link active travel schemes within the Avenues Programme on Argyle Street, St Vincent Street, Sauchiehall Street, Renfrew/ Killermont Street and Cowcaddens Road.

The council website says the street’s central location, gentle gradients and proximity to the main shopping area “strengthens its suitability as an active travel link”.

A key feature of the route would be having Mitchell Street become a mixed traffic quiet street with a contra-flow cycle lane which would allow cyclists to access the West Nile Street Cycleway from Argyle Street.

Existing footway widths would be maintained and a reduction of vehicular traffic is proposed.

From Gordon Street to Bath Street, a segregated bi-directional cycle track is proposed to provide a safe, traffic free cycle route, wider pavements and public realm improvements.

This section would be intersected by St Vincent Street and West George Street and could be accessed via Drury Street, West George Lane, West Regent Lane, Bath Lane and West Regent Street.

Parking and loading along this section has been maintained where possible in the proposals.

From Bath Street the segregated cycleway would  over to the west side of the road enabling it to connect more directly with Cowcaddens Cycleway.

As the route crosses Sauchiehall Street, the cycleway would be signalled so the pedestrian crossing is maintained as a wide and user-friendly route.

Between Bath Street and Killermont Street, the carriageway is proposed to be reduced to one lane.

Work shops have been held with key stakeholders such as the emergency services and transport operators as well as business, accessibility and active travel groups.

The deadline to give feedback on the plans via an online survey is Friday, January 10.
