Video: ‘A Minecraft Movie’ | Anatomy of a Scene

Hey, this is Jared Hess, director of “A Minecraft Movie.” OK, in this scene, our main character is Jack Black. Jason Momoa and Sebastian Hanson are on a dangerous detour in Steve’s diamond stash. But they’ve got to get away from this big, gnarly biological superweapon, the piglin. Henry hit it. We had an amazing production designer on this film, Grant Major. He did the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, and we decided early on that we wanted to build all of these sets practically. When we were putting the sequence together, we thought it would be super fun to just go to a black screen. Jack’s torch blows out. “What’s that sound?” “Chill out Gar-gar, we’re totally safe.” And then being disoriented, not knowing where they are, but also being able to pack this moment in with some really rad Minecraft sound effects. It was also important, too, to have it just for the reveal, because it was such a big space. We didn’t want to give away that they were in Steve’s creeper farm, surrounded by walking green bombs. “Garrett, you got us into this mess. Get out and push!” “OK!” Jason Momoa’s character, he’s a bit of a delusional ding dong in this movie and gets them into trouble. And gets knocked around a bit. We had a ton of fun coming up with the size of the minecart design because we wanted to fit Jack and Jason in the same cart, and they are two of some of the juiciest hunks in motion pictures. They have very robust haunches, and the circulation was getting cut off on their thighs when we were shooting, so we had to take a lot of breaks. “I love you, Dennis!” For people that don’t play the game, redstone is like electricity. It’s used to power stuff. So in this we’re using redstone. It’s what gives power to boost the minecart rail.
