Dermot Crowe: From U2 to Oasis, four decades of concerts in Croke Park has been a lesson in conflict resolution

Neil Diamond, long haired and tanned and wearing an open-neck sequin shirt, took to the stage in Dublin in June 1984 for a landmark performance.

The 43-year-old American singer headlined the first major concert event held in Croke Park, slap in the middle of the GAA’s centenary year. If the GAA focus was mostly on past remembrance, Diamond’s show to 40,000 fans provided a hint of what the future might hold.
