Gerry Adams’ defamation action against the BBC was “a cynical attempt” by the former Sinn Féin president to “launder” his reputation, a lawyer for the broadcaster has told the High Court.

Paul Gallagher SC told jurors that someone cannot come in and say their reputation was harmed by an allegation they sanctioned the murder of an informer when their reputation was that of someone who directed the operations of the Provisional IRA.
