HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. (KDVR) — The Highlands Ranch community came together Thursday night to remember a young man fatally struck by a vehicle a year ago.
March 6, 2024, 13-year-old Alex Mackiewicz was crossing the street, in a crosswalk, on his way to school, when, authorities say, he was struck by a careless driver.
At Thursday’s candlelight vigil, both Mackiewicz’s parents spoke, as well as Colorado Sen. John Carson, who said he is spearheading efforts to increase careless driving penalties.
The driver, in the case, was convicted of careless driving resulting in death, which is considered a misdemeanor. He was sentenced to one year in jail.
An attorney says the family is in the process of filing a civil lawsuit.
