WPL 2025: Shafali, Niki Prasad star as Delhi beat Mumbai in last-ball thriller

Delhi Capitals beat Mumbai Indians by two wickets in the second match of the Women’s Premier League 2025 (WPL 2025) on Saturday, February 15 at Kotambi Stadium, Vadodara. After being put in to bat first, Mumbai were bundled out for 164 in 19.1 overs as Annabel Sutherland (3/34) and Shikha Pandey (2/14) preyed on their batters.

Nat Sciver-Brunt held the innings together for Mumbai with her innings of 80* (59) studded with 13 fours. In reply, Delhi thrillingly chased down the target on the last ball as Arundhati Reddy survived a close run-out chance to seal a victory for her side.

Delhi’s chase got off to fiery start as Shafali Verma came out all guns blazing and mercilessly thrashed Mumbai bowlers all around the park. The swashbuckling opener wasted no time in settling down and got off the mark with a gigantic six against Saika Ishaque on just her second ball. She further smacked four consecutive boundaries against the left-arm spinner and put her belligerent strokeplay on display.

With her at the crease, it seemed that Delhi would chase down the target pretty quickly. However, Hayley Matthews came to Mumbai’s rescue as she got Shafali caught at mid-wicket for 43 (18). In the very next over, Shabnim Ismail destroyed captain Meg Lanning’s (15 off 19) stumps to leave Delhi on 60/2 in 6.1 overs.

Sarah Bryce’s quick cameo helps DC make a comeback

After the powerplay, Amelia Kerr and Nat Sciver-Brunt also continued to pile on pressure on Delhi as they accounted for Jemimah Rodrigues (2 off 5) and Annabel Sutherland (13 off 10) respectively to leave them reeling at 76/4 in 8.5 overs. After four quick wickets, Alice Capsey (16 off 18) and Niki Prasad (35 of 33) held the innings together with their 33-run stand off 36 balls.

However, Capsey’s innings never got going, and she finally holed out to long on, which brought Sarah Bryce to the crease. The right-handed batter played a quick cameo of 21 (10) to take Delhi closer to victory. Just when Delhi seemed to be running away with the game, Hayley Matthews struck for Mumbai, getting the prized scalp of Bryce in the 18th over.

With no recognised batters left, Niki Prasad took the onus of taking Delhi home on her shoulders and almost brought them on the verge of a win as DC required two runs off the last two balls. However, Prasad’s dismissal on the penultimate ball made all three results possible, but Arundhati Reddy made sure Delhi got over the finishing line as she dived at the striker’s end to complete the second run on the last ball. As a result, DC won the match by two wickets and began their campaign on a winning note.

Nat Sciver Brunt’s heroic innings helps Mumbai post 164

Earlier in the day, Mumbai got off to the worst possible start as Shikha Pandey struck in the first over itself, dismissing Hayley Matthews (0 off 2) on the third ball of the match. Following the early blow, Nat Sciver-Brunt joined Yatika Bhatia at the crease and got off the mark with a boundary in the second over against Alice Capsey. Sciver-Brunt and Bhatia were developing a good partnership and added 31 runs for the second wicket off 22 balls.

However, Shikha Pandey nipped it in the bud by dismantling Bhatia’s (11 off 9) stumps in her third over. After two quick wickets, captain Harmanpreet Kaur joined Sciver Brunt at the crease and the duo complemented each other really well by forging an attacking partnership for the third wicket.

They put on 73 runs off just 40 balls for the third wicket as Harmanpreet ripped apart Annabel Sutherland for four consecutive boundaries and a six. But it was Sutherland who had the last laugh, as she finally got rid of Harmanpreet (42 off 22) on the fifth ball of the over to leave Mumbai on 107.3 in 10.5 overs.

After the departure of MI captain, no other batter put her hand up to support Sciver-Brunt, who continued to keep the scoreboard ticking. Mumbai were eventually bundled out for 164 in 19.1 overs as Sciver-Brunt was left stranded on 80* (59).
