Aston Villa have completed the signing of Dutch forward Donnyell Malen from Borussia Dortmund in a deal worth €23 million, with potential add-ons of up to €3 million. The 25-year-old attacker has agreed to a contract running until 2029, bringing added firepower to Unai Emery’s squad during a critical phase of the season.
The signing signals Villa’s ambition as they contend for European qualification while managing a busy schedule, including Champions League and FA Cup commitments. With the summer departure of Moussa Diaby and inconsistent form from Leon Bailey, Malen’s arrival will alleviate pressure on Ollie Watkins and young talent Jhon Durán, who have been key contributors up front.
Malen offers a wealth of experience, having featured in 21 matches for Dortmund this season and netting five goals. Last year, he tallied 15 goals and five assists across 38 games. Before his time in Germany, he made a name for himself at PSV Eindhoven, scoring 40 goals in 80 appearances and cementing his reputation as a prolific and versatile forward.
Villa’s new signing also brings familiarity with English football, having spent two years in Arsenal’s academy from 2015 to 2017. During his time with the Gunners, Malen impressed in youth competitions and earned a spot in the senior team’s pre-season tour before transferring to PSV in search of first-team opportunities.
Known for his speed, sharp attacking instincts, and versatility, Malen is expected to compete for a place alongside Villa’s established attackers, including Bailey, Morgan Rogers, and Watkins. His ability to play across various positions in the front line gives Emery additional tactical flexibility.
Villa supporters will hope that Malen’s return to English football sparks a resurgence in their attacking performances as they seek success domestically and on the European stage. The Dutchman’s proven goal-scoring record and experience at the highest levels are poised to make him a pivotal figure in Villa’s ambitious push this season.
