GLENVIEW, Ill. (WGN) — Gruesome details have emerged in the slaying of a 61-year-old man found dead inside a northwest suburban Glenview home.

In a Skokie Courthouse hearing on Thursday, prosecutors allege that 55-year-old Charles Poulos, who faces a first-degree murder charge following the death of his housemate, fired at least 13 shots while the victim was asleep.

According to prosecutors, Poulos remained in poor condition, both physically and financially, after losing a leg and kidney to infection.

Cook County prosecutors revealed that it was around 4:20 a.m. on Tuesday, March 2, that the accused arose, straped on his prosthetic leg, descended to the basement of his Glenview home with a gun in each hand, and opened fire.

Authorities said James Solger died from multiple gunshot wounds and determined the manner of death to be homicide.

Afterward, ring cameras captured Poulos leaving his home near Glenview and Long. Detectives and forensic specialists later determined he went to the Rivers Casino in Des Plaines following the alleged killing.

Prosecutors say that in the lead up to the deadly ambush, tensions had been simmering at the Glenview home. Police responded to the property on more than half a dozen occasions to break up disputes.

“The victim failed to pay rent several times over the course of the last 10 months,” Cook County prosecutors said in court. “And due to the unpaid rent, the defendant was unhappy.”

The gruesome discovery of Solger’s body in the blood-soaked basement was in response to the victim’s sister calling police for a well-being check.

A Cook County judge denied Poulos a pre-trial release.
