Millbrae City Council votes 'no confidence' against embattled Sheriff Corpus

MILLBRAE, Calif. (KRON) – The distrust is growing for San Mateo County Sheriff Christina Corpus. Another city council took a vote of “no confidence” against the sheriff, who faces a slew of accusations including racism, homophobia and abuse of power. The sheriff has denied all of the allegations.

The 5-0 vote came after the council members heard multiple testimonies in support of and against the embattled sheriff. A number of sheriff’s deputies attending the meeting said they want Corpus to resign.

Speaking on behalf of the sheriff’s office, Julie Lind with the San Mateo Labor Council claimed  Corpus created a toxic work environment.

“Just as we want Millbrae to safe, we should want the people to protect it to be safe at work. The sheriff’s administration is beyond repair. There’s no righting this ship as she remains as captain. No one is above the law, and public officials must uphold the highest standard of integrity and accountability,” Lind said.

Others in support of sheriff Corpus say she is the reason why streets in San Mateo County are safe and that all of the allegations against Corpus are nothing but a “witch hunt.”

“She’s always been righteous and dedicated to the mission of civil rights. In my opinion, I’m sharing the Corpus that I know, it seems to me that the play of the day is guilty before proven innocent,” said one community member.

Millbrae Mayor Anders Fung made it clear that he is in support of whatever the sheriff’s office needs in order to remain successful.

“It’s about you, that is why this resolution is being discussed and it’s worthy of this discussion because it shows the support of the City of Millbrae in support of you who come to serve and protect our people every day,” he said.
