SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Afternoon temperatures are warming up each day through the rest of the work week as fog creeps into coastal areas each morning.

A ridge of high pressure is strengthening over the entire western U.S. bumping afternoon temperatures 10 to as much as 20 degrees warmer than normal away from the immediate coast. The warming trend will peak Thursday and Friday with widespread 80s in the inland valleys and triple digits in the deserts.

This week at the coast, dense fog and low clouds will moderate temperatures and lower visibility in the mornings. The cloud layer over the water will slowly thin out by early afternoon and bring partial clearing to the coastline.

On Thursday and Friday, daytime highs for the beaches will top out in the low 70s with mid-80s in the valleys, mid-to-upper 70s for the mountains and near 100 degrees for the deserts.

With the popular Coachella Music Festival happening in Indio, prepare for hot and dry conditions to start off the weekend as desert communities look to reach 103 degrees by Friday.

The warming trend will not spill over into the weekend as high pressure aloft starts to weaken by Saturday. Cooler weather and more widespread cloud cover is expected by Sunday into early next week.
