Ontario’s police oversight agency says its investigating the circumstances of a woman who died after being arrested in Kenora on Saturday.
Ontario Provincial Police arrested her on an outstanding warrant around 11 a.m. on Saturday in Kenora, then put her in a cell at the Kenora detachment, said the province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) in a release Monday.
The 46-year-old went into medical distress early on Sunday morning and first aid was administered. Paramedics took her to the hospital, where she was put on a ventilator. She was pronounced dead Sunday evening, the release said.
“The post-mortem took place today,” said the SIU.
It said it has assigned three investigators and two forensic investigators to the case.
The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of police that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
The woman was not named in the release.
CBC reached out to OPP for comment but did not receive a response as of publication time.
