A66 closed over Pennines to high-sided vehicles amid 50mph winds


The closure affects the major road East and Westbound between the A1M (Scotch Corner) and the M6 (Penrith) today amid the worsening weather conditions. 

(Image: MET OFFICE) Road users wishing to travel across the Pennines are advised to plan ahead and consider alternate routes such as the A69.

It comes as the region is hit by strong winds, with Darlington set for 50mph wind gusts on Friday for several hours around midday. 

The Met Office has also issued a yellow weather warning for wind across the North East, from 6am until 6pm today Sunday, February 23.

The forecaster is predicting gusts of 50-60mph in the late morning and as much as 70mph in exposed sports along Irish Sea coastlines.
