The blaze broke out in the Poundland building on the high street earlier this evening.
Buses are being diverted and people evacuated as firefighters tackle the incident.
In a video shared with the Echo, smoke is seen billowing above the city centre.
A plume of black smoke can be seen billowing from Southampton city centre following a fire near Westquay.

The scale of the fire is yet to be confirmed by the fire service.
A spokesperson for Hampshire Fire said: “We were called at 5.57pm.
“We remain at the scene and crews from St Mary’s, Redbridge, and Hightown are in attendance.”
