The nine-bedroom townhouse, located in the sought-after Park Circus area of the city, is listed for sale for offers over £2.5 million.

Designed by Charles Wilson and James Boucher in the 1870’s, the building was formerly the Italian consulate (having been an Italian social club in the early 1930s) and  subsequently served as Glasgow’s register office.

Describing the property as one which “oozes grandeur”, Rightmove said the townhouse “seamlessly marries original features with contemporary touches”.

Internally, the house boasts Ionic columns and a broad marble staircase, as well as intricate forged metalwork that was commissioned by the original owner, Walter MacFarlane, the founder of Saracen Foundry. Other period treasures include the elaborate plasterwork, an Art Nouveau billiards room, a glass-domed anteroom, parquet wood flooring, wall friezes and fine wood carvings.

The property joins a host of others which have captured the imagination of home-hunters across the nation, including Jurgen Klopp’s former mansion in Formby, a Grade I-listed Abbey in rural Oxford and a 19th-century Georgian house sits on Britain’s most expensive street, Buckingham Gate in Westminster, London.
