North Yorkshire Police announced this evening that they are no longer treating the death as suspicious.
Albert Street, off Walmgate, York, was cordoned off shortly before 11.30am yesterday. Police said a woman in her 60s had been found dead.
A 53-year-old man was arrested in connection with her death and held in police custody overnight.
This morning the cordon was still in place while detectives and scientists carried out investigations.
But late this evening, police announced: “Following extensive enquiries into the death of a 61-year-old woman at an address on Albert Street in York that was reported at 11.26am on Thursday (May 8) detectives have confirmed that it was not suspicious.”
They did not release the name of the deceased.
The statement continues: “A 53-year-old man arrested in connection with the investigation has been released with no further action required.
“A report into the death is being prepared for the coroner. The woman’s family is being supported.
We thank the local community for their assistance and understanding.”
