Weather warning issued for New Year’s Eve in parts of North Yorkshire

York is not included in the warning but Met Office forecasters still expect strong gusts of up to 45mph to hit the city on Tuesday (December 31), with gales of up to 35mph predicted on Monday.

The yellow warning is in place from 7am to 11pm on Tuesday and covers most of the county north of York and out to the coast.

Meanwhile, temperatures are set to drop on New Year’s Day with a yellow warning for snow in place for York from 9am until the early hours of Thursday.

No snow is currently forecast for York on Wednesday but the Met Office has predicted rain with temperatures falling to between 1C and 4C throughout the day.

The forecasters expect temperatures to drop again on Thursday to between 0C and 2C.

Tony Wisson, the Met Office’s deputy chief meteorologist, said: “Later in the week, wintry showers are likely to be a feature of the forecast as a cold northerly flow becomes established.” 

Neil Armstrong, the Met Office’s chief forecaster, added: “With such varied and potentially fast-moving weather conditions it is important for people to keep up to date with the forecast.”
