Children are assessed at the end of Year Six as they leave primary school.
The latest performance figures show 61 per cent of children across England reached the expected standard across reading, writing and maths when assessed at the end of the 2023-24 academic year.
In Bolton this was 64 per cent.
But which schools in the area performed the best? We rank the top 10 below.
1. The Olive School, Bolton
In first place is The Olive School, Bolton.
The Olive School, part of the Blackburn-based Star Academies group, was rated as “outstanding” in its most recent Ofsted report in 2019.
The school is now planning to move into the site occupied by the former Jubilee Centre on Tennyson Street, Halliwell, which will make way for a 420-place modern school.
An agreement was reached between the school and the council in March 2019 to use the former Jubilee Centre site.
This was given a boost by the Jubilee Centre’s move to its new £6M centre on Crompton Way in June 2023.
Some 92 per cent of pupils at the school met the expected standard in reading, writing and maths.
2. The Oaks Primary School
The Oaks Primary School, on Sharples Hall Drive, is an Ofsted rated good school.
In their most recent Ofsted report, published last February, inspectors praised the school, adding that pupils, who described the school as a place that ‘feels like a family’, were ‘well cared for’.
Coming in second place is The Oaks Primary School – the school had a score of 91 per cent meeting the standard.
3. The Valley Community Primary School, and Beaumont Primary School
The school which was graded as outstanding by Ofsted last year – and has been ranked in the top five per cent of schools for the past 10 years.
With 88 per cent of pupils meeting the expected standard, The Valley Community Primary School, and Beaumont Primary School come third on the podium of the best performing primary schools in Bolton.
Beaumont Primary School, was also recognised for its “extraordinary” Key Stage 2 results in 2023.
5. Masefield Primary School, and The Ferns Primary Academy
Masefield Primary School was visited by Ofsted as part of an ungraded inspection last September — with inspectors stating ‘the evidence gathered suggests that the inspection grade might be outstanding is a graded inspection were carried out now”. The school is currently marked good.

Ofsted described the school as ‘happy and welcoming’ and one where children achieve ‘exceptionally well’.
Similarly, The Ferns Primary Academy was described in its most recent Ofsted report as a ‘vibrant place for pupils to learn and thrive’ .
Rounding out the top five with 87 per cent of pupils meeting the required standard in maths, reading and writing are Masefield Primary School, and The Ferns Primary Academy.
7. Egerton Primary School
At Egerton Primary School, where 86 per cent of pupils met the required standard by the end of year 6.
Last year, the school received a letter from Damian Hinds, the Minister for Schools congratulating staff and pupils on their outstanding results.
8. Oxford Grove Primary School
With 85 per cent of pupils meeting the expected standard in reading, writing and maths, Oxford Grove Primary School comes in eighth place.
The school was rated “outstanding in every area” following an Ofsted inspection in 2023.
The school was ranked as outstanding for the quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, leadership and management as well as early years provision.
9. Eatock Primary School
In ninth place is Eatock Primary School.
Eatock Primary School in Westhoughton achieved the highest possible Ofsted grade last year following an inspection which found children ‘thoroughly enjoy learning’ and ‘achieve very well’.
At this school, 84 per cent of pupils met the required standard.
10. Blackrod Primary School
And rounding out the top 10 is Blackrod Primary School.
Blackrod Primary School was marked outstanding in all areas by Ofsted, which carried out its first inspection at the school in 12 years.
Some 83 per cent of pupils met the required standard in reading, writing and maths here.
