Pictures as armed police conduct raid at derelict County Durham bank building


Multiple police vehicles as well as armed police swarmed Front Street in Consett this morning leaving residents confused.

The building, a former Barclays bank, was the target of the operation as police were spotted going in and out of the building. 

The bank – located opposite the town’s Subway – closed in September 2022. 

The reason for the operation has not been revealed – as Durham Constabulary said: “Due to operational reasons, we cannot provide any further information at this time.”

Residents walking past the building were left shocked and puzzled at the sight of armed police and more.

John, 69, from Winlaton came into Consett for shopping: “We’re not used to armed police in this country.

“I think Consett isn’t as bad as other places for derelict buildings but there are some and it’s a problem.”

Another resident who works directly over the road said: “There were big vans this morning and two armed officers.

“There was a drone in the air and undercover vehicles too.”
