India’s young batting sensation Abhishek Sharma recalled his idol and legendary India all rounder, Yuvraj Singh’s 6-sixes feat from 2007 as he arrived in Durban for the upcoming T20 series against South Africa. Notably, India and South Africa are all set to play a four-match T20I series beginning from November 8 at Kingsmead, Durban.
After arriving at the venue for the series opener, Sharma reminisced about Yuvraj’s six sixes against England’s Stuart Broad and how the moment inspired him to become a cricketer one day. The 24-year-old tried to figure out which areas did Yuvraj target during his blistering knock.
“I’ve come here for the first time but when I saw it for the first time on TV and now I’m here so it’s a dream come true. I was inspired by Yuvraj Singh’s 6-sixes during the T20 World Cup 2007. On my Day 1 here, I was trying to figure out where all did he hit from which end. Then we all began discussing, he hit first two there and third one was over point and covered all the areas. It’s a great memory,” said Sharma in a video released by the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India)
Yuvraj achieved the feat during a must-win encounter for India in the T20 World Cup 2007 as his knock of 58 (16) helped the team post 218/4 which eventually helped the team to register a narrow 18-run win. Before unleashing his beast mode on Stuart Broad, Yuvraj had a heated exchange with Andrew Flintoff which fired him up and Broad was at the receiving end of his wrath.
Further speaking ahead, Sharma recalled the celebration he did with his colony after India’s win and hoped to recreate the same magic during the first T20I vs South Africa to make Yuvraj proud.
“I was watching the game with my family at home. When we won that game my entire colony came out and we celebrated the victory. I never thought then that I will get to come here but I just wanted to play. I’m sure he (Yuvraj Singh) will watch the game too and it will be dream for me because I got inspired by watching him play here. I will try my best and make him proud,” he added.

Sharma got his T20I career off to a great start by smashing a hundred in the very second game against Zimbabwe. However, since then he’s failed to cross the 16-run mark in the next five innings. In eight matches played so far, he’s scored 159 runs at an average of 22.71 and a strike rate of 170.96. The young opener will be eager to put his failures behind him and start off the T20I series with a bang in the first game.
