San Jose business broken into twice in same morning: 'It’s a big problem'

(KRON) — The owner of Bizzy Fit Meals in East San Jose is dealing with back-to-back break-ins in the same morning — just three months after opening her small business.

Shortly after 5 a.m. Wednesday, surveillance video captured a man scoping out the restaurant, which is located off McKee Road. After first trying to break in through the front door, the suspect targets the window next to it, runs in and steals the cash register with $100.

Shortly after, another person gets inside and steals some of the aprons sold in the store.

Susanna Torres — Bizzy Fit Meals’ owner, cook and designer of the aprons — called the thefts “heartbreaking.”

“I have flat screen TVs in here, there was a tablet,” said Torres. “There were other high-value items. Those were not taken. What they were just concerned about was the quick turnaround which is maybe to feed an addiction. So what hit me is how bad the situation is.”

“The amount of activity that I see here, it is definitely scary,” Torres continued. “I don’t ever take out the garbage without looking left or right.”

Torres said she knew when she opened her shop that it was going to be a challenge. She grew up in East San Jose and wanted to make a change in the neighborhood.

“Many people have not seen a balanced meal before,” said Torres. “There are a lot of people in this area that are not bilingual and maybe they’re combatting cholesterol, or they need weight loss help and if we don’t bring the help here, they’re not going to go out.”

Torres said she is left with an eyesore, but she’s not letting that stop her and her mission for her community. She said the now boarded up window will soon become a symbol of inspiration with bible verses and artwork, all to show her neighbors that she will persevere.

“It’s a big problem, but it’s a small amount of people,” said Torres. “The community is a beautiful community. People need this service, but we’re going to have to come together and unite.”

Police are investigating the incidents.

Torres said the cost to replace the window will be thousands. Torres applied for a store grant before opening up her business. She is currently on the waitlist but hopes to get approved so she can use the money to fix the window.
