Community Need
- Up to now West Texas has lacked a comprehensive cancer center, forcing residents to travel hundreds of miles for specialized care. Travel is costly, and patients often miss work and lose pay when they leave El Paso. The majority of El Paso cancer patients who have the financial means to leave the city for care travel to MD Anderson in Houston.
- 3,275 El Pasoans live with cancer annually. Leukemia, breast, liver and kidney cancer rates are rising.
- About 1 in 2 Hispanic men and 1 in 3 Hispanic women will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. El Paso is 81% Hispanic
