Australian Open: Aryna Sabalenka reaches quarters by dominating Mirra Andreeva

Aryna Sabalenka continued her dominant run at the Australian Open 2025 as she breezed past Mirra Andreeva to reach the quarterfinals in Melbourne. In what was a dominant display, Sabalenka defeated Andreeva in straight sets and with a scoreline of 6-1, 6-2 to reach the quarters for the third consecutive year. The World No.1 and defending champion also extended her winning streak at the Australian Open to 18 matches, a run that has seen her as a favourite to complete a hat-trick of titles in Melbourne.

Andreeva had defeated Sabalenka in the French Open quarterfinals in a big upset, but failed to just get going in the match against the World No.1. The Belarussian star set the tone with her serve in the first game and didn’t allow the teenage star to get any offence going. While Andreeva returned the favour by winning the next game off her own serve, that was the best for the Russian in the first set. Sabalenka went on to break Andreeva twice to take a 5-1 lead and sealed the first set in just 24 minutes.

The Russian star committed 18 unforced errors during the match and it came back to haunt her in the end. The second set started much like the first one as both women were able to win off their own serves before Sabalenka was able to break the Russian in the 3rd game.

Game 5 saw some good spirit from Andreeva as she won 5 points on the trot to hold and had Sabalenka having to dig deep to avoid a break in the next one. Unfortunately, the Russian’s effort wasn’t enough in the end as Sabalenka wrapped the game in one hour and 2 minutes to secure her passage into the quarterfinals.

Super happy

Sabalenka said that she was thrilled to get the win in straight sets against Andreeva.

“Always tough matches against Andreeva, she’s so young but playing such great tennis,” the 26-year-old said on court, as quoted by Reuters.

“I’m super happy to get through this difficult match in straight sets.”

Sabalenka will face either Donna Vekic or Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the quarterfinals.
